Opinions on the Svbony SV503 ED 70mm "quadruplet" telescope
  « Part 1 »  


I am pleased to express my personal opinion on this product, which I currently own and have had the opportunity to analyze and test.
Passed, deferred or failed tests ?
It might come as a shock, but let me give you my personal conclusion right away ... :
Failed, no excuses.


I would like to remind you that AstroKMan’s reviews are independent and have no partnership ties with any manufacturer, producer or retailer.
My reviews are free from any constraints and reflect personal opinions that anyone is free to question,  therefore, do not view them as definitive or infallible.
They are the result of years of experience in this hobby but remain personal assessments and, as we know, personal assessments are subjective and open to debate.


This telescope has too many issues, too many problems encountered with my specific unit, though I hope mine is just an isolated case.


It starts with a focuser locking mechanism that doesn't work, a missing hex screw on the black focus knob, visible internal reflections during flat field imaging and pronounced chromatic aberration, even for an achromatic telescope like this one.
Furthermore, I observed coma at the center of the field of view, while the stars appear as perfect pinpoints at the edges of the image.
Even worse, the focuser assembly unscrews itself from the telescope tube as the temperature changes.
It is truly a great way to waste money, especially for anyone buying this telescope with the intention of doing long exposure imaging.

Before judging this review too strict, I want to give you an example.
If you go to the supermarket and try to save money by buying cheaper products, that's not why what you buy doesn't have to work like it should, if it didn't maybe a knife will not have a wooden handle and the blade will never be sharp like a high quality knife but the knife must still be able to cut the food sufficiently well.
So when you buy an achromatic refractor telescope with a field flattener you don't expect that it offers perfect images but it should at least guarantee mechanical stability, above all especially if it is advertised as a strength and the field leveled thanks to the new optical scheme should be a further confirmation on the type of use of those who buy this telescope.
If the focuser loses its focus and if the optics introduces reflections of spurious light and if the lenses introduce coma that in a refractor is not a good sign then this is not a good telescope although cheap.
The telescope does not keep the promise of being a deep sky observation.

How can you partially resolve these issues if you are determined not to choose a different telescope?
I am sharing the hardware upgrades I made to the telescope, while noting that Svbony has always shown itself to be responsive to the problems I encountered.


First, I installed the missing hex screw on the knob.
It is interesting to note that the focuser shaft has only one flat side, yet there are two hex screws.
One hex screw locks the focusing shaft so the knob cannot slip (flat side), while the other secures directly to the shaft itself (round side), providing greater resistance to mechanical torque.


Unfortunately, this does not solve the problem with the locking mechanism on my unit, even after tightening the hex screws on the focuser assembly.
So, I decided to install a motorized focuser.


The telescope is a "budget" model, it would have been a real shame to spend extra money on a higher quality "name" brand version.
The GEMINI electronic focuser, is perfect.
It offers great value for money and I haven't encountered any issues whatsoever during assembly or use.


If you have the necessary skills to work with the ASCOM software system, I highly recommend this focuser.
The quality to price ratio is truly excellent.
Just a reminder that if you click on the photos, you will see them at full size.

  

The focuser drawtube no longer slips because the electronic focuser motor has good torque and endurance, even under the weight of a DSLR camera, which is certainly heavier than a CCD camera.
I turned a problem into an advantage, after degreasing the focuser's sliding tube, which had been saturated with excess grease of questionable quality, grease that was extremely runny.




I hate to say it, but personally, I don't consider the mechanics of these focusers to be among the best, even compared to other budget models of this type, despite the inclusion of the two corrector elements designed to flatten the field of view.
Perhaps better quality control from the manufacturer is needed here, but these are just my personal observations.

This is how I resolved the mechanical issues with the focuser assembly, it is a bit pricey for someone looking to buy this telescope and immediately start long exposure deep sky astrophotography but I believe it is a hardware upgrade worth making regardless of any existing problems.
An electronic focuser is always a great asset for astrophotography.
And now, what do we do about the other problems that were found ... ?!


A quick extra note :
to improve the telescope's mechanical stability I spaced the mounting rings further apart.
This meant sacrificing the use of the retractable dew shield which must now remain permanently extended and locked in place to prevent the tube from slipping within the tight rings due to temperature fluctuations (heat/cold).
To further enhance mechanical stability and reduce stress during slow positional changes I added an Svbony handle.
Beyond improving stability this also gives you the option (if desired) to mount a guide scope without overburdening the setup with extra adapters and accessories.
In theory, using an off-axis guider system, which is even lighter, would be even better but that is a topic for another article.

Okay, now let's address the issues of chromatic aberration, coma in the central field of view, and internal reflections within the optical tube.
I already have some ideas about this but I’ll only know the truth which I’ll share with you after running some practical tests.


To deal with such pronounced chromatic aberration, I’ve decided to follow the approach recommended by Svbony: using their 2-inch SV231 filter mounted directly onto a 50mm (2-inch) extension tube, which is necessary to achieve proper focus with CCD cameras (and potentially DSLRs).


We will see how effectively this filter reduces the chromatic aberration of the SV503 ED 70mm (second/flat version), a non apochromatic quadruplet.
And now, the time has come for practical tests ... with one final small note.


I replaced the telescope's standard Vixen-style bar with a longer aftermarket one, giving me more room to shift the telescope for proper balancing on the mount.
I strongly get the impression that this telescope cannot be recommended to people with no experience in the hobby and no means to spend extra money to put together a functional setup, though I hope I am wrong, as these are merely my own personal and debatable opinions.

Waiting for a few nights free from clouds, toxic smoke pollution drifting in from Canada, rain, meteorites, and natural disasters ... considering it has been nearly a month without a single good night for stargazing.

iEXOS-100 02 - Firmware Update

Original Firmware : ES20A02.0

Updating the firmware on the Explore Scientific iEXOS-100 02 equatorial mount was easy.
It simply required following the procedures and using the correct software application.
Connecting the iEXOS-100-02 to a PC via USB is incredibly simple and straightforward it is worth noting.
The setup is still undergoing testing, but it is performing very well.
There have been no issues with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection stability.

Always check the official Explore Scientific website for new firmware releases, it’s worth it.

S-FPL51 : degradation and corrosion ("rotting") ?!

S-FPL51 is a premium, low-dispersion optical glass manufactured by Ohara.
While generally machined as bulk substrate for telescope lenses Ohara provides separate "Low Tg" i-Line and molded glass variations.
This allows S-FPL51 (and its analogs like FCD1) to be precision-pressed into high-volume aspheric shapes without traditional grinding.

Unlike the higher tier S-FPL53 or FPL55, S-FPL51 features thermal characteristics that make it more challenging to mold into complex geometries while avoiding thermal stress.
However, its base cost is lower than S-FPL53 making it a popular choice for budget ED (Extra low Dispersion) telescopes and commercial optics.



An acidic atmosphere can accelerate the degradation and corrosion ("rotting") of FPL-51 optical glass (manufactured by Ohara), a fluorophosphate material used in telescopes.
This glass is chemically delicate and susceptible to environmental stress degradation, particularly in the presence of moisture and acidic agents.

1. Why it deteriorates :
Low-dispersion glasses like FPL-51 contain elements (such as fluorine) that can react with airborne acids, causing the glass's lattice structure to break down, resulting in clouding, the formation of surface micro-cracks, and corrosion.
In the optics industry, this type of degradation is known as "glass rot" (breakdown of surface properties and loss of transparency).

2. How to protect it :
To prevent this phenomenon in acidic or highly polluted environments several measures can be taken. 

Use of filters :
Install UV/IR or other protective filters in front of the lens.

Airtight storage :
Store the optics in sealed environments and use silica gel to keep relative humidity very low (< 30–40%).

Temperature control :
Avoid sudden temperature changes that lead to condensation forming on the lens.

Condensation combined with acidic gases creates an extremely corrosive environment.

iEXOS-100-02 PMC - part 1 (reasons for a choice)

A brief disclaimer.

My reviews reflect my personal opinions and you are free to hold views and assessments that differ from mine.

The Explore Scientific iEXOS-100-02 PMC-Eight was officially announced in December 2018, with initial production units rolling out and retail availability beginning in early 2019.Explore Scientific regularly iterates their mounts (such as the updated 02 versions featuring upgraded internal antennas and built-in Bluetooth). These upgraded iEXOS-100-2 iterations have been in ongoing production over the years.

Before telling you about my impressions regarding this product I want to remind you who Explorer Scientific is and how it was born.

Explore Scientific is a leading designer and manufacturer of high-quality telescopes, wide-angle eyepieces, microscopes, and sport optics.

Founded in 2008 by former Meade Instruments executive Scott W. Roberts, the Springdale, Arkansas-based company is highly regarded among amateur astronomers and STEM educators for making advanced, professional-grade equipment accessible to hobbyists.


I have to admit that when I was just a young boy, I dreamed of owning a Meade Schmidt-Cassegrain (SCT) telescope.
Back in 1982, Meade was competing with Celestron... their 2080 models are unforgettable.

I have always appreciated Meade products, and that is no secret to anyone who knows me.


... Why I chose this equatorial mount ...

Over the course of more than 35 years I have used all kinds of hardware setups.
In recent years I consistently relied on very heavy, bulky equatorial mounts and optical tubes (OTAs).
Having moved from Italy to the USA over five years ago and living in a different environment I decided that my priority was to use lightweight, portable setups while still maintaining the precision and reliability required for my astronomical observations and with an added focus on ease of use.


The iEXOS-100-02 PMC-Eight equatorial mount is lightweight and compact, yet it offers solid mechanical stability (We will discuss this further in the future) and precise astronomical tracking (with tolerances acceptable for certain types of astronomical observation).


The iEXOS-100-02 PMC-Eight equatorial mount features a wireless connection system (WiFi or Bluetooth) that allows for remote control without the hassle of long cables and its current price point is truly entry level.


It is an entry level product with sophisticated technical features, ready for enhancement through simple hardware upgrades such as replacing the tripod with a sturdier more stable model, among other things (which we will discuss later).


The iEXOS-100-02 PMC-Eight equatorial mount was my choice and I am happy with it especially considering the excellent after sales support provided by Explore Scientific.

Further articles describing this product in greater detail will follow.
I plan to create a simple guide for configuring the various applications and will try to explain how the equatorial mount operates remotely in the simplest possible way.

SVBONY Guide Camera SV905C

The SVBONY SV905C camera has long been known to amateur astronomers, so there is little point in repeating its technical specifications or showing you an unboxing.
There are already many well-made written reviews and videos covering this product.

With my review, I aim to present a personal technical analysis that reflects my own views on the product.
These are personal thoughts and observations which you are, of course, free to disagree with and I hope you appreciate this technical analysis and review.


The SVBONY SV905C guide camera isn't a perfect product, but it is functional and delivers on its promises.
Given its often discounted price, it is hard not to recommend this product, especially if you intend to use it as a guide camera.

A B&W (monochrome) model would have been preferable for guiding purposes but since the IMX225 is a "low noise" sensor it still performs well.
In any case, it would have been a better choice to offer a guide camera with a black-and-white sensor rather than a color one.


I have to tell you that there are some negative aspects regarding this SVBONY product, and SVBONY should address them as soon as possible.
These technical issues relate to the product's mechanical and electronic construction, and I will try to explain them to you.


The two printed circuit boards are not attached (fixed) in any way to the camera's metal body and are free to rotate.
The reason they do not rotate when the closing cover is attached is that the connectors themselves (USB-C and Ethernet) prevent this, as their bodies are fitted into the openings in the cover.



Furthermore, as you can see, the inside of the chamber's closing lid features grooves ... slots designed to engage with a section of the printed circuit board (PCB) to prevent it from moving when connectors are plugged in or unplugged.
Unfortunately, this does not happen because the mechanical tolerance is (big) too loose, the small tab on the lid fails to press firmly against the PCB allowing it (and the connectors, naturally) to shift around (up/down).


This calls for a major "WARNING" in capital letters because all mechanical stress during the use of the SVBONY camera is exerted on the connectors, not only when plugging and unplugging them but also during actual operation, as the cables have weight (however slight).
This is especially critical if the camera is used as an autoguiding system where movements, even slow ones, can lead to electrical and mechanical issues over time.
There is yet another technical aspect to discuss.


Someone made a mistake here, the circuit board leads (pins) were not trimmed to the correct length.
This can cause physical contact between the circuit board pins and the camera's metal body creating short circuits.
Simply insulating the camera body with non conductive material or shortening the pins would prevent this potential issue which could otherwise damage the camera's electronics.

I wonder if this analysis explains the numerous user reports regarding frequent disconnections or sudden malfunctions.

This product is excellent when it works, especially considering the discounted price, but it isn't perfect.
Please don't ask me whether or not you should buy the SV905C as that depends entirely on your personal choices.
I am simply pointing out certain technical (and non-technical) aspects of the product.
The final decision and assessment are up to you.
Personally, I’m enjoying the product as long as it keeps working without issues.
I’ve partially resolved some of these problems with a DIY fix, but I plan to upgrade the camera's hardware in the future.


A thin spacer made of non conductive moisture-resistant material can help stabilize the printed circuit boards, preventing mechanical stress on the USB C and Ethernet connectors however this is a temporary solution and I am already considering how to resolve the potential short circuit issue between the PCB pins and the camera's metal body.
